Peanut Brittle

Last night I finally met with Jown who I haven't seen for nearly two years.

When I went to Baguio with the tromapips last month, I only bought pasalubongs for three people -- family (collective), Augie, and Jown. She loves peanut brittles. At least I think she still does. Just looking at this plastic bottle of Filipino confection brings a lot of stupid high school memories. I love looking at it. However, I bought the Romana with no expectations that I'd actually give it to her anytime this year, let alone the following month.

Jown is a special friend, the closest buddy I've ever had in high school. It's funny as a matter of fact, to think that you have spent almost two years pining for your next meeting. And when the day you've been waiting for finally arrives, you suddenly preferred waiting for friend always. A good understanding that things can't be restored after a certain time has passed, like ugly keloids on the skin.

Let's not probe into the details. Certainly, I had fun talking to her -- rather, she talked and I listened. It was like chatting with a whole new Jown as I found it harder to relate with what's happening to her these past few years.

But there's no need catching up. I think there's no point catching up on the latest between two friends who rarely see each other. One may even be at risk of hurting himself/herself more. Your friend's stories were all so fascinating. And you sigh endlessly wishing you had been there when that occasion happened.
